Could The Quentin Tarantino Star Trek Be 5 Or 6 Years Away?
The Star Trek franchise is remarkably strong today as there are multiple directors interested in making films, but it seems one potential project may be further off than we thought. Quentin Tarantino has been making noises regarding a desire to make a Star Trek movie and while it seems that the project really could happen, Simon Pegg says it's probably years away. The actor, who co-wrote Star Trek Beyond and is intimately involved in the current film franchise, says that since the director is currently involved in another major project, he simply won't have time to work on Trek for a few years. According to Pegg...
But he's going to be so busy with Once Upon a Time in Hollywood that I can't see him doing it for five or six years, by which time we might be too old anyway.
Quentin Tarantino has been working on his next project for some time and the movie, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, is set for release next July. Certainly, we would not expect the director of Pulp Fiction to give any time to another film until his current film is done. On top of that, there's another Star Trek movie in development, written by J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay and directed by S.J. Clarkson, that will move forward in the interim. Paramount Pictures certainly won't want to release two Star Trek movies too close together, and the new Star Trek doesn't currently have a release date, which means it's likely at least a couple years away. Tarantino's follow-up would then be at least a couple years after that, at the earliest.
It certainly seems that Simon Pegg's math, which he set out to the Edmonton Journal, seems about right. As excited as people seem to be for adding a bit of Quentin Tarantino style to the Star Trek universe, it may be a while before we see it, if ever. It seems Simon Pegg is seeing Tarantino's potential film as the fifth in the current series, rather than some sort of standalone project. He thinks the actors might all be too old by the time such a movie is ready to go, but let's be honest, ago was never an issue for the original cast, so it seems unlikely that will be the determining factor here, though it's certainly possible that some actors might decide four is their limit.
There's also the fact that Quentin Tarantino has said he only wants to make 10 films as a director, and Once Upon A Time in Hollywood will be his ninth. Will he really want to end his directing career with Star Trek? He may have some other project he wants to make before he wraps things up, which could cause him to let this one go.
