Ryan Reynolds Is Teaming Up With Stranger Things Producer For A Video Game Comedy

Now a veteran of the comic book movie genre, having enjoyed plenty of success in the Deadpool movies, Ryan Reynolds is next looking to make his mark on the video game genre. Next year, Ryan Reynolds provides the voice for the titular character in Detective Pikachu, and now he is joining another video game movie, only this one is an original idea and not based on an existing property. The actor will join Stranger Things producer Shawn Levy for the video game action comedy Free Guy.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the sci-fi action comedy from 20th Century Fox will see Ryan Reynolds in the starring role as a background character in a video game who doesn't know that he's in a video game. He has an awakening and discovers the nature of his reality. Then he must join forces with an avatar to prevent his world from being shut down by the makers of the game. The script for Free Guy is written by Matt Lieberman, who also wrote next year's animated reboot of The Addams Family. Shawn Levy will direct Free Guy and also produce alongside Ryan Reynolds. In addition to his producing and directing work on Stranger Things, Shawn Levy has also helmed the Night at the Museum films, Real Steel and This is Where I Leave You. A release date for Free Guy has not yet been set.

The story here sounds familiar, as we have seen lots of stories from The Matrix to The Truman Show that have looked at characters having their eyes opened to the artificiality of their world and their true purpose. The difference here is this will be taking what sounds like a more comedic approach and see the character not trying to escape his world, but save it. Shawn Levy has plenty of comedic experience having directed Date Night and The Internship, and we know Ryan Reynolds can bring the funny, so hopefully that recipe can deliver a hilarious take the world of video games from a somewhat new perspective.

Based on the fact that the world is in danger of being shut down, it sounds like Ryan Reynolds' character will be a resident of some sort of online game that is full of non-playable characters and avatars for real world users alike, with neither knowing the truth about the other at first. There's a lot of great stuff to make fun of in the online gaming world, and you have to think that Free Guy will tap in to some of that. I imagine that there will also be plenty of references and jokes directed specifically at the avid gamers in the audience.

When we talk about video game movies, we are usually mean adaptations, and in that regard Hollywood has failed magnificently. We don't see as many attempts like this to tell a video game story that isn't tied to any specific property, story or fan expectation. The video game movies that aren't adaptations range in quality, from Pixels to Wreck-It Ralph. Still, this being an original story it should give Free Guy plenty of freedom to have a lot of fun and tell its own comedic story.

It's been nearly three weeks since Avengers: Endgame arrived in theaters, and there are still a ton of questions floating above the fandom. The Russo Brothers did the impossible with their massive blockbuster, meeting every expectation that fans had, and providing countless plot twists. One of which involved the God of Mischief himself, Loki.

Tom Hiddleston's Loki was killed by Thanos in the opening sequence in Avengers: Infinity War, seemingly ending the character's story forever. But Hiddleston is attached to a Loki series for Disney+, and the macguffin for that possibility was provided during Endgame's time heist. The sequence saw 2012 Loki escape with the Space Stone, an outcome that should have a massive impact on that universe. Now The Russo Brothers have confirmed this created a new timeline, with Joe Russo recently saying:

Loki, when he teleports away with the Time Stone, would create his own timeline. It gets very complicated, but it would be impossible for [Cap] to rectify the timeline unless he found Loki. The minute that Loki does something as dramatic as take the Space Stone, he creates a branched reality.

Cue the Loki Disney + series. Loki's fate was one of the unclear aspects of Endgame's conclusion, although now that the Russo Brothers have lifted the spoiler ban, they can be more chatty an expansive about the film's contents.

Avengers: Endgame's time heist was super ambitious, and brought the surviving heroes back to various points across the MCU's long history. The biggest group traveled to the Battle of New York from The Avengers, and split up to acquire three Infinity Stones. Everything was going according to plan, until Hulk smashed into an incognito Tony Stark, sending the Space Stone flying.

True to character, Loki seized this opportunity, and vanished. It's unclear where he might have traveled to, and Tim Hiddleston's character wasn't mentioned at any point during the film's third act. But now The Russo Brothers have confirmed that he's got a new timeline in the works. In the same conversation with Business Insider, Anthony Russo echoed his brother's statement, saying:

Were dealing with this idea of multiverses and branched realities. So there are many realities.

The multiverse is a complicated concept to bring into the MCU, but the massive franchise has earned it at this point. And it's going to factor heavily into Spider-Man: Far From Home, which is the final installment in Phase Three. The newest trailer revealed that Jake Gyllenhaal's Mysterio was from another dimension, with the snap causing a tear in the multiverse. So it'll be fascinating to see how this type of storytelling moves the property forward, and if those tears become a recurring event in Phase Four.

It's currently unclear when Loki's Disney+ series will become available, as the future of the MCU is largely a mystery. The Lion King Official Trailer Adds Some Humor To Simbas Stunning Savanna

The Lion King is one of the most popular animated movies Disney has made to date. It's almost a foregone conclusion it will be one of the studio's most popular remakes. A brand new trailer for the CGI spectacle is now here, and while it contains a lot of epic moments you'll remember from the original, it also provides us with some laughs, in the form of fan-favorite sidekicks Timon and Pumbaa. Check it out.

The trailer gives us a couple of new voices compared to the last one. Previously, the only voice we heard was James Earl Jones' which, considering he was in the original film, was something of a cheat. Now we hear Chiwetel Ejiofor for the first time as Scar. It's certainly a very different voice than that of Jeremy Irons, but no less menacing. We also get to see, but not hear, other characters like the hyenas, Nala, Zazu, and, of course, Simba himself.

Then, at the end, we hear Billy Eichner and Seth Rogen for the first time, as the voices of Timon and Pumbaa. The pair are performing a chorus of "The Lion Sleeps Tonight," which I guess means this is our first chance hearing any of the music in The Lion King, even though this probably wasn't the song people were waiting for.

Timon and Pumbaa sang the same song in the original Lion King as well, and seeing what we've seen before is pretty much what this trailer is all about. While some of the dialogue that we hear in the trailer isn't identical to lines from the original, many of the images are. We see Scar telling Simba to run away, and the hyenas chasing him as he does. We see Simba, Timon, and Pumbaa, walking along together in single file profile, one of the most iconic images from the animated classic.

While people certainly have fond memories of the original version, and are going to want to see their favorite parts in the remake, I certainly would like to see a little something different in the remake that will set it apart from the original, not simply have it be a complete retelling of the story as we already know. There's still plenty of space for such things to fit in between the scenes we love, and the classic moments are going to be what draws in a lot of the audience, but it would be nice to see something a little new in the trailer.

Either way, The Lion King is almost destined to be a hit. It will be the third Disney remake of 2019 following the recently released Dumbo and the upcoming Aladdin, but with a movie as popular as this one remake fatigue seems highly unlikely.

The new Lion King arrives in July.
