How Bumblebee Almost Featured Megatron

When Bumblebee director Travis Knight approached the Transformers spinoff, he looked to his childhood with the popular toys the films are based on. Transformers were first introduced in the '80s and had a G1 design that has morphed quite a bit through the years.

Travis Knight originally wanted to include G1 Megatron in a rare scene in the franchise that shows the fall of Cybertron, and it sounds like it was going to be awesome. Here's what he said in an interview with io9:

I had this whole thing boarded where we're where we see [Decepticon leader] Megatron and he comes in like Sauron, just blowing shit up and laying waste to everything.

...then he realized that to keep the continuity of the Transformers franchise, there's no way Megatron could be on Cybertron in the '80s. In the first film, Captain Witwicky finds Megatron in the Arctic Circle back in 1897. The Decepticon leader is then transferred to Sector 7 by the '30s, where he continues to chill until the events of 2007's Transformers.

Sometimes a vision just doesn't match what can be done, even though an appearance of G1 Megatron on Cybertron would have been quite the site for any fan to geek out over. When Bumblebee director Travis Knight approached the Transformers spinoff, he looked to his childhood with the popular toys the films are based on.

Although Travis Knight's Megatron idea would have been fun to see on screen, perhaps the absence of the Decepticon can lead the way for the film to differentiate itself from the Transformers franchise. Megatron was featured in a majority of the films, including in 2017's Transformers: The Last Knight.

Transformers were first introduced in the '80s and had a G1 design that changed endless times throughout the years. Travis Knight said when he first pitched using an earlier aesthetic of Transformers there was some pushback from Paramount, the producers, and Hasbro. But they ultimately ended up coming around to the idea.

Bumblebee offers quite a bit of nostalgia for the era it is set in too. One of the most iconic films of its decade, E.T. had a huge influence on the development of the story, as pitched by Steven Spielberg himself who is also an executive producer on the film.

Travis Knight's classic approach to his Transformers film seems to have paid off as the film has received positive praise from critics prior to its release. The film currently has a staggering 95% Tomatometer score, hovering over the praise of releases including Aquaman and Mary Poppins Returns. Bumblebee stars Hailee Steinfeld, John Cena, Dylan O'Brien, Justin Theroux and Angela Bassett and comes to theaters December 21.

Is The Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom Trailer Hinting At A Plot From The Previous Movie?

No matter how many times dinosaurs cause chaos, humanity just can't seem to understand that it's best not to mess with these prehistoric creatures in the Jurassic Park universe, and it doesn't look like that lesson will finally be learned in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom later this year. Last December, it was revealed that the fifth installment of the Jurassic Park franchise will follow Owen Grady, Claire Dearing and and their new allies attempting to evacuate as many dinosaurs off Isla Nublar as possible before a volcano erupts and destroys the whole island. However, in the Super Bowl TV spot that aired Sunday, we learned that yet another genetically engineered dinosaur will be running rampant, but it might not end there. Looking at the below screenshot, it appears that now weaponized dinosaurs are being auctioned off for military use, something that was touched upon in 2015's Jurassic World.

Toby Jones' Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom character hasn't been identified yet, but as you can see above, he appears to be the auctioneer at the sale for some prized dinosaurs, one which has parties from all around the globe participating, judging by the currencies listed on that screen. Admittedly, it's not explicitly stated that the dinosaurs being auctioned are meant for militaristic application, but looking at those suits in the crowd, you can reasonably assume that they're not interested in putting these creatures in a new wildlife reserve.

Using dinosaurs as weapons, be it for a country's army or private defense, is something that was briefly explored in Jurassic World through Vincent D'Onofrio's character, Vic Hoskins. To Vic, dinosaurs were the ultimate weapons of war, and if he'd had his way, they would be sent out into the battlefield rather than entertain vacationers on Isla Nublar. Hoskins was responsible for the creation of the Indominus Rex, and when it broke free, he tried to use the velociraptors from the IBRIS Project take down the destructive dinosaur. Alas, Vic's plan failed, and before he was later killed by one of those raptors, he boasted about how useful dinosaurs would be as weapons.

Cut to Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, where soon the surviving dinosaurs from Isla Nulbar will be without a home, allowing certain individuals to step in, seize some of these creatures for themselves and make a profit off of them. Fallen Kingdom producer (and Jurassic World director) Colin Trevorrow previously said that the sequel would use the dinosaurs as a parable for the treatment of animals today, including "the use the military has made of them." Rafe Spall's character, Eli Mills, can also be heard in the Super Bowl spot saying, "Jurassic World, the island, all of that is in the past. I want to show you the future." If that doesn't scream "Use dinosaurs to attack the enemy," I don't know what does.

Of course, with another genetically-enhanced dinosaur running free, no doubt whatever these sinister individuals have planned for selling dinosaurs as weapons will go to hell. That being said, since Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom will spend a good chunk of time on the Isla Nublar evacuation, perhaps this militaristic subplot will only be partially explored, allowing for Jurassic World 3 to fully delve into this story as a thrilling conclusion to the trilogy

A Crazy Rich Asians sequel has already been greenlighted, much to the delight of fans. However, if you were hoping for the movies sooner rather than later, your hopes may be dashed. Constance Wu, who starred in the first installation and would be back for China Rich Girlfriend, revealed it may be longer for the new movie to come together than we initially thought. In a recent interview, Wu said:

I don't know much about the production side of things. But I know that [director] Jon [M. Chu] wants to direct the next one, and all next year he's directing In The Heights.

Constance Wu revealed that Jon M. Chu definitely does want to come back for round 2 after directing the first movie, which makes sense, considering the cultural impact that Crazy Rich Asians had. We previously learned that he, along with Peter Chiarelli and Adele Lim, would be collaborating on China Rich Girlfriend. We also knew that In The Heights would be coming up, but it wasn't clear that it would take most of 2019 for that to come together. Which means China Rich Girlfriend might not even really get off the ground until 2020, depending on how timelines work out.

Per Wu's comments at Vulture Festival (via Deadline), China Rich Girlfriend may or may not follow the second book in Kevin Kwan's popular series, but she also mentions she's not super in the know about the creative process. We did previously learn that Astrid would be in the second movie more significantly than she was in the first movie.

This actually totally makes sense, considering Astrid gets plenty of time on the page in the books and is a character that is a big deal outside of the Nick and Rachel relationship that took up a good portion of the first flick. If she's the focal point, however, I wonder if we'll get to see a lot of the stuff about Rachel and her dad.

As for In The Heights, the movie based on Lin-Manuel Miranda's popular and award-winning musical, was dealing with some trouble for a while. The project had been set up at The Weinstein Company, which then went through bankruptcy. A few months ago, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Quiara Alegra Hudes and more nabbed the rights back. Regardless, it's still taking a while for the flick to move forward.

In turn, it wasn't always a shoe-in that Crazy Rich Asians would be a big box office success. It was a nice win for Warner Bros., I'm sure, but it's not as if the studio went ahead and greenlighted a sequel before seeing how the first flick did.

All in all, everything should work out. Musical fans should be happy to finally be getting In The Heights and fans of Crazy Rich Asians should be happy to get a sequel from the same director. Good vibes all around. The issue will be in the waiting.
