First Look At Piglet, Eeyore And Tigger In Christopher Robin

First Look At Piglet, Eeyore And Tigger In Christopher Robin

Back in early March, tears were shed, hearts were melted and childhood memories were brought to mind when the first trailer for Disney's Christopher Robin debuted. The emotional gut punch came at the end of the trailer when we got a glimpse of Winnie the Pooh and heard Jim Cummings' iconic voice. The silly old bear was the only resident of the Hundred Acre Wood to make an appearance so we've been eagerly anticipating a look at our other childhood favorites. Now we have one as some official images have dropped, giving us our first glimpses of Piglet, Eeyore and Tigger. Check it out:

Based on how Pooh looked in the teaser trailer, this is about what I expected, and all the characters look exactly how they should. Seeing the residents of the Hundred Acre Wood all sunbathing with shades on is really cute. I like that Piglet gets his scarf, and I'm hoping there is a bow on Eeyore's tail even though we can't see it. This is one of those movies where images don't tell you much about how something will look onscreen and you really need to see them in motion, especially since they are stuffed animals. But if the magic of teaser trailer is indicative of the whole film, we don't have anything to worry about and Piglet, Eeyore and Tigger (and hopefully some other favorites) will look just as good as Pooh when they are brought to life.

What's so interesting about this approach is that when this movie was announced, I imagined that these characters would look far more cartoony and not like stuffed animals come to life. This aesthetic allows for Pooh and friends to have their classic Disney looks while retaining their stuffed animal origins and fitting the time period. Looking at the characters sunbathing, it basically just looks like four stuffed animals dressed up and that is the point as this is actually part of the story. We are essentially seeing stuffed animals, because that's what they are, and obviously they are not 'alive' in this shot.

According to Entertainment Weekly, the film finds a grown up Christopher Robin who thinks he's losing his mind when Pooh & Co. come back into his life. Everyone else can see them, but they just see stuffed animals whereas he sees them as alive, with some sort of magic at work. So it sounds like this isn't a Toy Story situation where they play dead when people other than Christopher Robin are around. This makes it seem like even when they are moving and talking, he is the only one who can see it. I can imagine that would make a person and those around them think they are going mad. That could get dark if it was all in Christopher Robin's head, but I'm chalking it up to the idea that he is connected with his inner child and can only see the truth because of that. Sort of like Peter Pan in Hook, except for it isn't make believe, it's real.

Christopher Robin hits theaters and your brain's nostalgia center on August 3rd. Check out our guide to see all of Disney's Upcoming Live-Action Remakes and for all the most wonderful things about Tiggers, stay tuned to CinemaBlend.

Godzilla: King Of The Monsters Director Has An Idea For A Prequel

Godzilla: King Of The Monsters Director Has An Idea For A Prequel

The Godzilla franchise has had a long history in theaters, dating all the way back to 1954. The behemoth title character has continued to be a pop culture icon in the decades since its debut, and the franchise returns to theaters shortly. Godzilla: King of the Monsters marks the whopping 35th installment in the property, and the blossoming MonsterVerse will presumably only continue to grow in the next few years.

Krampus director Michael Dougherty is helming King of the Monsters, which will pick up on a narrative that started with 2014's Godzilla. Dougherty had to balance a ton of god-sized titans in his upcoming Godzilla movie, as the title character dukes it out with a ton of franchise favorites. And the director's already got some ideas for another addition to the franchise: a prequel. Dougherty recently opened up about this concept, saying:

I like the idea of going back in time and telling creatures' stories from different eras. Skull Island was set in the '70s, but personally I'd like to do Godzilla B.C., go back to ancient times and really see the Ray Harryhausen-esque world where primitive humans had to try to survive with these creatures. Maybe we'd get to see the first time mankind truly encountered Godzilla, and get to see how that relationship was christened.

Well, this is an awesome idea. The Godzilla franchise may be going strong for decades, but there are still plenty of narrative possibilities for the MonserVerse to mine. And that includes an origin story for the beast in ancient times.

Michael Dougherty's comments to SFX Magazine (via JoBlo) are sure to excite the generations of Godzilla fans out there. The big green guy has battled a ton of foes throughout his time on the big screen, but we've never seen Godzilla in such early stages of mankind. It would add a unique dynamic to the dynamic between humans and the monster, and break new ground for the property as a whole.

When one thinks of Godzilla, typically moviegoers picture the title character laying waste to a city, and probably fighting another iconic kaiju. But it would be a new twist to see him back in ancient times, without any skyscrapers to destroy. Instead, Godzilla would be be given the space for his behemoth body-- one that only continues to grow in the MonsterVerse.

It would also be fun to see how primitive humans would interact with such a creature. Rather than involving the military or the Monarch Organization, man would be left to their wits when trying to survive the kaiju's wrath. It's a new direction for the franchise to go, although it's unclear whether or not Michael Dougherty's prequel idea will ever come to fruition.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters will arrive in theaters on May 31st. In the meantime, check out our 2019 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.

Melissa McCarthy Opens Up About The Ghostbusters Reboot Backlash

Melissa McCarthy Opens Up About The Ghostbusters Reboot Backlash

The Ghostbusters reboot was one of the most controversial films in recent memory and now Melissa McCarthy has spoken out about it. The actress co-starred alongside Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones in a version of the 80s comedy that saw women take over all the lead roles. This change was met with a pretty serious backlash, but McCarthy doesn't really understand it. When asked, the actress recently said...

I just don't know why people are so afraid of women. It's fascinating to me.

The negative response to the movie was nearly instantaneous. The movie didn't need to be released in theaters or even go into production. Simply the announcement that the movie was happening resulted in a vocal negative reaction. This lasted all the way until the movie came out. Rather than being a simple comedy, Ghostbusters became a cause and many people took one side or the other.

The initial negative response was focused around the fact that the new film gender-swapped the cast, which does go to Melissa McCarthy's point that many people had a problem simply with the fact that the film starred four women instead of four men.

Of course, that wasn't the only specific criticism of the movie. Some simply had a problem with the fact that Ghostbusters was being rebooted at all, regardless of the gender of those in the lead, feeling that doing so in some way did damage to the original Ivan Reitman film that so many had grown up with. To that argument, Melissa Mcarthy also gives Yahoo a response.

If a movie 35 years later is 'ruining your childhood,' don't blame us --- you've got your own issues.

Clearly, Melissa McCarthy doesn't believe that her movie actually did any damage to the original Ghostbusters. To be fair, the movie still exists in its original format and is available for anybody to watch whenever they like. It's unclear what damage could have been done. Lots of franchises have made bad sequels and the well-loved originals have stood the test of time. And while the new Ghostbusters met with a mixed response from fans and critics, it doesn't seem like all that many actually thought it was that terrible.

In the end, the new Ghostbusters was something of a disappointment. While it's box office gross wasn't awful, it was an expensive movie to make and so almost certainly lost money. We'll never really know how much the backlash actually contributed to the theatrical response, though, director Paul Feig has said that after the heat on the film has died down more people seem to have caught the film on DVD and the response he's been getting has been much more positive.

Based on the mediocre box office it seems highly unlikely we'll see this team of Ghostbusters on the big screen again. What that means for the franchise as a whole is unclear, though there are certainly plans to do more with the brand in the future. Perhaps it will be met with a warmer welcome.
