Kevin Smith Has Serious Praise For The Aquaman Trailer

Kevin Smith Has Serious Praise For The Aquaman Trailer

San Diego Comic-Con is now officially in the rear view, as are the myriad new trailers and footage debuted at Hall H and the Con's various other panels. One of the biggest trailers was for DC's next blockbuster: James Wan's Aquaman. Fans were treated to the DC Universe's version of Atlantis, bringing back Jason Momoa's hero-- who is now chock full of sassy lines. The trailer has received mixed reception from fans, who loved the fantastic visual affects, but weren't happy with the bits of dialogue sampled. But Aquaman's first footage does have a major cheerleader: Kevin Smith. The comic book aficionado and director recently spoke to how spot on he thought the trailer was, saying:

This shit looks like the truest comic book movie ever made. Like it really comes close to the Aquaman universe I know, and the look of the Aquaman universe I know.

Although the overall quality of Aquaman is still a mystery, what is clear is that the movie will look unlike anything we've seen from either the DCEU or MCU. A majority of the film is set underwater, making filming and visual affects a major challenge. But DC seems to have spared no expense, with Atlantis bearing a close resemblance to the iconic comic book setting.

Kevin Smith's comments come from his Fatman on Batman podcast, where he regularly discusses and dissects the latest updates from DC's film, TV, and comics. Aquaman is the next installment in DC's live-action universe, and the pressure is on for acclaimed horror director James Wan to bring Arthur Curry's world to the big screen, and hopefully deliver DC's second critical reception. Patty Jenkins' Wonder Woman is the only big win for DC's big screen adventures, and both the fans and studio are hoping this December brings number two.

It's also fair to say that Kevin Smith's reaction to the Aquaman trailer might be slightly biased. Smith is an unabashed comic fan, and gets extremely hyped up about each new blockbuster arriving in theaters-- regardless of their flaws. Smith has been known to break down into tears about Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, geek out about Batman v Superman, and has even directed episodes of The Flash and Supergirl. Smith knows and loves comics, so he's understandably jazzed about Atlantis and Arthur Curry getting a chance to shine.

Aquaman will dive (literally) into the background and internal struggles of Jason Momoa's Arthur Curry. Following his fun and badass introduction in Justice League, James Wan focus on the politics of Atlantis, and the title character's heritage as part man and part Atlantean. Plenty of new characters will be introduced, including popular villain Black Manta (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II).

Aquaman will arrive in theaters on December 21st. In the meantime, check out our 2018 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.

Specifically, the the trailers include footage that serve as red herrings to the film's true contents. Just look at Infinity War's massive trailer. One of the most iconic shots from the marketing shows the Avengers running toward their enemy in the Battle of Wakanda, including The Hulk.

Joker Movie Extras Allegedly Peed Between Train Cars After Being Stuck On Subway For Hours

Joker Movie Extras Allegedly Peed Between Train Cars After Being Stuck On Subway For Hours

Making movies is supposed to be glamorous, but filming the new Joker movie has apparently been a little rough. It seems a group of extra that were filming a scene in a subway car recently found themselves stuck in the car for three hours, resulting in an unknown number of them being forced to urinate on the subway tracks when they weren't allowed a bathroom break.

It's unclear exactly what happened that resulted in these extras being stuck on the subway car together unable to leave. The revelation of what happened came about following a complaint being filed with the Screen Actors Guild, which requires extras to get a break every two hours, and the fact that they couldn't leave the subway car resulted in a violation. The incident is now being investigated by SAG and, according to TMZ, Warner Bros. is also looking into what transpired.

Anything can happen on a film set and that can certainly include excessive delays, but a situation that leaves people stuck on a subway car and peeing in between the cars seems a bit extreme. The fact that they were apparently also "locked" on a subway car also takes things to another level. Being stuck on the subway is no fun even if you're going someplace that you want to go, which clearly wasn't the case here.

Based on the report it sounds like this scene only involved extras, there's no mention of Joaquin Phoenix or other actors being involved. This was likely just being done to get shots of people on a subway as part of a larger sequence that will be edited together. It seems like this may have been just an attempt at getting some quick shots that took much longer than expected. Production may not have wanted to let the extras break so they wouldn't need to wrangle everybody together once filming was ready to go, but things got delayed and took longer than expected.

While delays are inevitable, if things really got to the point where people had to relieve themselves on subway tracks then clearly things went too far. Of course, if people were actually locked in the subway cars, as the report claims, then it seems like things went too far long before that, as that could be a serious safety hazard, not merely a sanitation problem.

Normally extras just show up and do a job and get paid a little a get to be in a movie. It's simple and easy and then everybody moves on. Unfortunately, being an extra on the new Joker movie apparently wasn't quite as much fun as the name implied. We'll have to wait and see if anything comes of the investigations or if we're ever given an explanation for what caused such a messy situation.

Of course, the Joker himself would probably find this story hilarious, so perhaps it's not too surprising such a situation occurred on this particular movie.

Yes, Hugo Weaving Was Asked To Reprise Red Skull In Avengers: Infinity War

Yes, Hugo Weaving Was Asked To Reprise Red Skull In Avengers: Infinity War

Despite being released back in April, moviegoers and Marvel fans haven't stopped discussing every frame from Avengers: Infinity War. The Russo Brothers did the impossible, servicing a massive cast of characters, and keeping the audience on their toes through plot twists. In fact, the directors even did a deep dive by bringing back Captain America: The First Avenger villain Red Skull.

The inclusion of Red Skull is something nobody saw coming, and his appearance also brought another revelation: actor Hugo Weaving didn't return to the role. Instead, The Walking Dead actor Ross Marquand played the villain. Fans have been wondering what happened to Weaving, and now we've seemingly got the answer: he was asked to return, but did not.

This revelation comes to us from Slash Film's Peter Sciretta, who was in the audience for a Q & A with The Russo Brothers after a recent screening of Avengers: Infinity War. It was during this talk that The Russo Brothers revealed Hugo Weaving was offered Red Skull's role in the blockbuster. They didn't go into details about the negotiations or what went wrong, but the final result shows that Weaving ultimately didn't return to the MCU during the film's Soul Stone sequence.

Red Skull's appearance and the Soul Stone scene actually ended up being one of the most heartbreaking moments from Avengers: Infinity War, and really helped to flesh out the character of Josh Brolin's Thanos. He and Gamora travel to Vormir so that he can collect the stones for his finger snap of death, which is where they meet the Stone's protector, Red Skull.

Ultimately Thanos must sacrifice a part of his soul in order to acquire the stone. While Gamora maintains he's lost since there is nothing the Mad Titan loves, his insidious intentions become clear. Thanos kills Gamora to acquire the stone, and becomes one step closer to "saving" the galaxy through his finger snap of death.

Gamora's death isn't something anyone anticipated, especially with Marvel's plans for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. But now that James Gunn has been fired and the franchise is on indefinite hold, does that mean Gamora is dead for good? And could Red Skull appear once more in Avengers 4?

All will be revealed when Avengers 4 arrives in theaters to end Phase Three on May 3rd, 2019. In the meantime, check out our 2019 release list to plan your trips to the movies in the New Year.

John Carpenter And Jason Blum Dont Think The Current Horror Boom Is Going To Last Long

John Carpenter And Jason Blum Dont Think The Current Horror Boom Is Going To Last Long

In case you haven't heard, we are in the midst of a horror boom. We've not only seen a surprising number of legitimately great scary movies in the last year, but audiences are also eating them up and generating shocking box office numbers. It's a very exciting time to be a fan of the genre -- but according to Blumhouse founder Jason Blum and the legendary John Carpenter, folks should really enjoy it while it lasts. Says Blum,

My feeling about horror being a big deal right now is that it's very cyclical. It's a big deal, so now everyone's going to make horror movies. There are going to be a lot of crap ones, and then everyone's going to say, 'Horror's not working anymore!' And then there's going to be much, much less horror. Then there's going to be a great one because there haven't been that many, and they're not going to get made unless they're really good, and then there's the boom.

Jason Blum has spent the last decade becoming one of the biggest names in horror, and he's seen the genre go through some massive changes in that time. As such, when he looks at the current "renaissance" -- which he very much helped kick-start by backing Jordan Peele's Get Out -- he doesn't really see a lasting trend, but instead a series of ebbs and flows.

The producer spoke about the current state of horror last month during the Los Angeles press day for David Gordon Green's Halloween, where he was paired with John Carpenter for roundtable interviews. Preceding his statement, he noted his curiosity about Carpenter's thoughts on the matter as well, and the genius director bluntly agreed:

You've got the secret. You haven't forgotten about Japanese horror, have you? Way back then - you haven't forgotten. That was a big deal! It went away. And [Jason Blum is] partially responsible for bringing in the new horror stuff.

Of course, John Carpenter is referring to the period in the early 2000s when Hollywood fell in love with creating English-language remakes of Japanese titles like Ringu (The Ring) and Ju-On (The Grudge). Fitting in with the conversation, that fad eventually died thanks to oversaturation, and then a few years later the exact same thing happened with the found-footage craze -- which was initially jump-started by the Jason Blum-produced Paranormal Activity.

During the interview, Jason Blum noted that specific experience, and even went as far as to map out a rough timeline of how the whole system operates:

Since I started it's dipped and come down. Paranormal Activity took off, and then it dipped around about five or you know, whatever, I don't know, four or five. It dipped, and then now it's ramping back up again. And I guarantee you in 12 months there'll be so many bad horror movies people will be like, 'I'm never going to see another horror movie again.' Because now it's like, 'Oh, we can make money if we make a horror movie!' And then they're bad... That's the market. That's how Hollywood works.

Jason Blum and John Carpenter's comments aside, it is worth noting that there is something somewhat special about the current horror boom in that it can't be readily defined. In the past couple years we've seen titles like the aforementioned Get Out, Andres Muschietti's IT, and John Krasinski's A Quiet Place become phenomenal successes, but there really isn't anything that ties the titles together beyond genre categorization. One has to wonder if there's a possibility that the variety involved might sustain things for a little longer -- but we'll just have to wait and see.

For now, the current horror boom is operating at full strength, and should provide a perfect cinematic atmosphere for the arrival of David Gordon Green's Halloween, which is in theaters this Friday.
