Why Ant-Man And The Wasp Chose That Second Post-Credits Scene

Why Ant-Man And The Wasp Chose That Second Post-Credits Scene

Warning: SPOILERS for Ant-Man and the Wasp are ahead!

After keeping its main story fairly self-contained, Ant-Man and the Wasp used its mid-credits scene to tie into Avengers: Infinity War. As Scott Lang was in the Quantum Realm, Hank Pym, Hope van Dyne and Janet van Dyne were dusted away by the Thanos snap, leaving Scott trapped in that other reality. Ant-Man and the Wasp could have left things there, but it would't feel like a Marvel Cinematic Universe installment without a scene being tacked on after the credits finished rolling, and in this case, we saw the giant ant covered for Scott during his house arrest going about its business while the world was going to hell. As for why Ant-Man and the Wasp chose to end things on that note, director Peyton Reed attributed it to wanting the post-credits scene to match the movie's lighter tone. In his words:

Well, I felt like it maybe leavened the drama of the events of Infinity War a little bit, and also we liked the idea that this ant - that Hank and Hope had set up as a decoy for Scott when he's [under] house arrest and had programmed to do what Scott did all day long - that maybe if the ant got enough of this, it might start to like hanging out at Scott's apartment. And maybe it likes playing the drums, and maybe is still staying and playing the drums. It just made us laugh. It seemed like the tone of our movie. The way the tone of our movie would deal with the events of Infinity War.

Given that Avengers: Infinity War was released just two months before Ant-Man and the Wasp, it was expected that the latter movie would somehow call back to the former. Still, like its predecessor, Ant-Man and the Wasp is one of the more lighthearted movies in the MCU, so to go from that to seeing Hank, Hope and Janet disappear alongside half of all other life forms in the universe is a major tonal shift. So as not to end on too much of a downer note, as Peyton Reed informed HuffPost, showing the giant ant playing drums as TV signals were going out and the world was generally going to hell is one way to give the audiences a last chuckle or smirk. At least we can take comfort knowing that Antony Jr. (or whatever its name is) was part of the half of the universe that wasn't erased by a certain purple-skinned Mad Titan.

Avengers: Infinity War marked the beginning of the end for the MCU's Phase 3, and while Ant-Man and the Wasp's main events took place before Earth's Mightiest Heroes, the Guardians of the Galaxy and other assorted superheroes faced off against Thanos and his minions, the sequel still found a way to connect to that devastating twist. We already know that Scott will somehow escape the Quantum Realm and be present for Avengers 4, but like nearly everything else about that movie, his exact role remains a mystery. It's also been rumored that an older Cassie Lang will appear in Avengers 4, meaning that Scott's daughter was also lucky enough to make it out of Infinity War intact.

Marvel May Be Pushing Disney To Bring James Gunn Back To Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3

Marvel May Be Pushing Disney To Bring James Gunn Back To Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3

It's been three weeks since it was announced that Disney and Marvel fired James Gunn from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 due to inappropriate tweets he made a decade ago resurfacing, and it's been quite at the proverbial rollercoaster since then. This decision has drawn polarizing reactions, but Gunn has accumulated a large number of supporters, as evidenced by many of the Guardians of the Galaxy cast membersstanding by the director and a petition asking for Gunn to be re-instated on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 gathering over 374,000 signatures. Last week, it was reported that Disney was unlikely to hire Gunn back onto the threequel, but supposedly Marvel Studios is pushing for the Mouse House to have a change of heart.

One day after word came in that Disney is interested in keeping the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 script that James Gunn wrote, Deadline reports that it has heard from sources that "back channel conversations" are taking place between Marvel and Disney, with the former trying to reach a compromise with the latter on bringing back Gunn for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. This is described as a "long shot," but the discussion has reportedly come in the wake of the Guardians of the Galaxy actors declaring their loyalty to Gunn. Dave Bautista, a.k.a. Drax the Destroyer, has been particularly vocal regard his support for Gunn, going so far as to say that if Disney didn't use Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, he would ask to be released from his contract.

At this point, it sounds like this is a last-ditch effort on Marvel's part to convince Disney that James Gunn should be involved with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, although it's unclear in the article if he would be put back in the director's chair as previously planned or serve in a different capacity, such as executive producer. Either way, it's the latest chapter in the messy Gunn saga, and we'll just have to wait and see if Disney is game for re-hiring the filmmaker or if the company stands by its decision to let him go.

Marvel reportedly wants to move forward on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 quickly. The threequel was already set to come out sometime in 2020, and apparently one of the reasons Chris Pratt's next blockbuster, Cowboy Ninja Viking, was delayed at Universal was not just because it was still undergoing rewrites right before cameras were set to roll, but also that Pratt was on a "tight timeline" to reprise Star-Lord. In order to meet a summer 2020 release, production needs to start early next year, and if Marvel can't find a director, be it Gunn or someone new, to oversee the project, then it will need to be delayed. The MCU has become one of the most popular film franchises in history over the last decade, and the Guardians of the Galaxy have played a big part with that. Regardless of what it decides on the director front, Disney will need to proceed cautiously with making Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 in the midst of this behind-the-scenes drama.

Keep checking back with CinemaBlend for all the latest updates concerning Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. In the meantime, the Guardians of the Galaxy will return on May 3, 2019 for Avengers 4, and don't forget to look through our Marvel movies guide to learn what else is in development for the MCU.

The First Halloween Trailer Is Terrifying And Epic

The First Halloween Trailer Is Terrifying And Epic

With the trend of nostalgia proving endlessly successful, it seems like just about any film property could rise from the dead. This includes the horror genre, as Blumhouse Productions will bring moviegoers back to Haddonfield for the upcoming Halloween movie. Jamie Lee Curtis is once again back to play OG scream queen Laurie Strode, with a brand new story that ignores all of the previous Halloween sequels. Fans have been eager to see the first glimpse at the upcoming slasher, and now the first trailer has finally arrived. Spoiler alert: it didn't disappoint. Check it out-- everyone is entitled to one good scare.

Does anyone else have chills? Michael Myers has returned to Haddonfield, but this time Laurie Strode isn't going to be a helpless teenagers. She's been anticipating their final showdown, and has prepared her home like some sort of safe house. But as Halloween fans know, that doesn't usually keep Michael out.

The Halloween trailer opens with some new characters: a documentary crew who is doing research about Michael Myers and the grisly murders he committed 40 years ago. Michael has been kept in Smith's Grove Penitentiary for the decades following his attack on Laurie's life, but Jamie Lee Curtis' character seems to understand that it's only a matter of time before they face off one last time.

Blumhouse's Halloween is already setting itself apart narratively than any of the previous sequels. This latest version of Laurie Strode is far more hardened than anything we've seen before, despite having raised a family. Her terrifying experience with Michael Myers (who is NOT her brother) is basically an urban legend around Haddonfield, and Laurie's house looks like a bit of a shambled mess. It seems like everyone has moved on from that night except for her.

Overall, it also seems like the new Halloween movie is going for more realness than any sequel since Halloween II. Michael Myers won't be magically escaping Smith's Grove, but able to escape through a bus crash. He doesn't seem to be an immortal monster, but a terrifying psycho who is hellbent on revenge. Despite both he and his mask aging, it's clear that he's spent his time in captivity thinking about murdering his sole survivor.

But Laurie is clearly not the only person in danger. Michael's escape also puts her daughter Karen (Judy Greer) and granddaughter Allyson (Andi Matichak) at risk as well. Halloween will no doubt be able to follow all three Strode women as they attempt to survive the night. Smart money says that the family will also work out their issues in the process, as Laurie's decades of paranoia have probably put a strain on their relationship.

Halloween will arrive in theaters on October 19th, 2018. In the meantime, check out our 2018 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.
